2021-22 Debate Bid Tournament List

What is a bid?

A bid is synonymous to a qualifying leg. Competitors need 2 qualifying legs, or bids, to attend the post-season national championship, popularly referred to as the Tournament of Champions (TOC). Regular season tournaments offer “bids” to competitors. For example, a tournament that is a “finals” bid will offer bids to the finalists (i.e. top 2 competitors). A semi-finals bid will offer bids to the semi-finalists (i.e. top 4 competitors).

What is the TOC?

The TOC is referred to as the Tournament of Champions. It is by invitation only to competitors who qualify by receiving 2 or more bids during the regular season. Around 80 competitors annually qualify to the TOC and it is considered the most prestigious high school debate tournament in the United States.

How do tournaments get bid status?

Tournaments get bid status based on a variety of factors, including strength of competition pool, caliber of judging, geographic location, community approval, and historical importance. Tournaments are classified as finals (top 2), semi-finals (top 4), quarter-finals (top 8 ) or octo-finals (top 16) bid tournaments.

How many bids do you need to qualify for TOC?

Competitors need 2 bids to be guaranteed a spot at the TOC. Competitors that receive 1 bid can apply for a special exemption at the end of the regular season.

How do I get a bid?

Competitors earn bids by attending bid-granting tournaments and performing well at them. Our club teams, online camps, and tutoring services are all designed to help improve competitive performance and we are the most successful private debate coaches in TOC debate history. Our students have received over 150 bids in the last 5 years.
